Afro Alice Hebdo – Altieri Fatima

This week, we interviewed a Haitian starlet with natural hair.  Keep on reading to get to know her more.

Tell Us About Yourself . Pale nou de wou.

I’m Altieri Fatima Genise Durand.   I’m 20 years old.

I’m a model, painter, photographer, and student.

I love art and I sing too.

I have a single “Femme” check it out on YouTube and I love life

Mwen se Altieri Fatima Genise Durand. Mwen gen 20 tan. Mwen se yon mannken, yon pent, yon fotograf epi yon etidyan.  Mwen renmen bagay atistik epi mwen konn chante tou.  Mwen gen yon mizik ki rele “Femme” ke w ka tande sou Youtube. Mwen renmen lavi.

When did you return Natural?  Depi kile w retounen natirel

 I’m natural since 5 months.

Mwen natirèl depi 5 mwa.

How did people surrounding you react to the change?

Some liked it some didn’t. Still fighting to keep it, being a model with natural hair it’s not that easy. Because high fashion need long straight hair and everything so all the time I gotta change my look for photoshoot and stuff. Sometimes I use a wig or weave. It’s not easy for me

Nan domèn nan, yo plis renmen moun ak cheve long ki dwat, lè konsa mwen oblije itilize yon perik oswa mete yon grèf pou m ka fè seyans foto oswa kèk defile.  Li pa fasil pou mwen men m ap kenbe la.

What is your hair regimen?  Ki swen ou bay cheve w?

Lol I would say water and “Hair food”

Dlo ak tout bagay ki ka nouri cheve a.

What do you like most about being natural ?

I love the fact that I’m different and I’m feeling comfortable. But also sometimes it’s a war to do my hair lol but I like it

M renmen cheve m ki natirèl la paske sa fèm santi m diferan epi mwen alèz.  Menmlè m poko fin byen metrize koman pou m byen fè cheve m, mwen renmenl.

A message to the existing, upcoming and potential natural hair community.  Ki mesaj ou ta bay moun ki deja retounen natirel, moun ki gen projet retounen natirel ak moun ki ta ka retounen natirel yo?

Being natural it’s not only the new style. To me it’s the only style, and it’s the best decision a girl can take. It’s shows respect to our God who actually create us like that and confidence to our self. I’m not saying that the other girls are not beautiful or confident but I’m saying that “WE” natural women natural hair we experience freedom and nature connection. And everyone who wanna try it please take the risk it’s worth it!!! And I pray that God can helps us with that fight to show the world that with our big hair we are Proud and powerful! Thank you afro Alice and specially Francisca who contacted me. Keep the good work.

M priye Bondye pou li ede nou nan lit nap mennen pou nou montre tout moun nou kapab epi nou fyè ak cheve pa nou.  Mèsi Afro Alice – Francisca.  Kontinye ak bèl travay n ap fè a.

Afro Alice Hebdo- Christelle Dossous au Naturel

I discovered Onaturell through a Haitian model with natural hair I interviewed last night and subscribed to their website.  And that’s how I met the face behind the project.  This week, we interviewed Christelle Dossous, CEO of Onaturell.  Read on to get to know more about her and her iniative.

Mwen dekouvri Onaturell pandan mwen tap entevyouwe yon mannken ayisyen ki gen cheve natirel epi mwen tou abone ak sit yo a. Li pi ba pou nou konn plis sou Christelle ak sou Onaturell.

Christelle Dossous

Christelle Dossous

1-  Tell us about you.  Pale nou de wou.

My name is Christelle Dossous. I was born and raised in Haiti. I studied Arabic languages and forensic nursing and now I am currently a medical student. I am the owner of Onaturell  which is brand/ blog. My goal as the owner is to educate people about proper hair care and encourage them to use raw, organic products in their regimen. I have a passion for languages, animals and traveling.

Mwen rele Christelle Dossous.  Mwen fèt epi mwen leve Ayiti.  Mwen etidye lang Arab epi swen enfimyè mediko legal. Kounya a map etidye lamedsin.

2-  Tell us about your career as a medical professional.  Pale nou de karyè w nan antanke etidyan nan medsin.

I started Medical school in August 2012 in St Kitts and Nevis and this Dec 2013 I came back to Haiti to continue with my medical studies at UNDH. Medical school is not easy, it’s a lot of dedication and work but I don’t see myself doing anything else. My goal is to be a gynecologist.

image

M komanse etidye lamedsin nan mwa Dawou 2012 nan peyi St Kitts ak Nevis epi nan mwa desanm ane pase a, mwen deside tounen nan peyi a pou m kontinye ak etid mwen yon an UNDH.  Etidye medsin pa jwet men piske se sa m we m ka fe e m renmen, mwen bay tout mwen menm ladan.  Mwen vle vin yon jinekologis.

3-  When and why did you return natural? Kilè epi koman w te tounen natirel?

I’ve been natural for 4 years now and December 2012 I did my 3rd  and last big chop. I decided to go natural because I wanted something different at that time. I was going through a lot and I felt like I needed a change of look. I just woke up on day and went to the barber and asked him to Big chop.

Mwen retounen natirel depi 4 an epi denye fwa mwen koupe chevem se te an desanm 2012.

4-   How did people surrounding you react to the change?

Everybody around me liked it and honestly I don’t recall anybody having to say something negative about my decision to go natural.

5-    Who were your supporters? Your hairspirations?  Kiyes ki te konn sipote w? Kiyes ki te enspirasyon w?

Nobody supported me in my decision to go natural because I didn’t tell anybody until I came from the barbershop. The decision was mine. After a while a lot of my friends would tell me how much they loved my hair etc. I think now my number one supporter ever is my boyfriend and I think if I ever permed my hair he will go bananas loool. I didn’t have any hairspirations when I first went natural but now I can say that naptural85 is my hairspiration just because throughout her journey she’s only been using organic products and her results are amazing.

6-   Are you working on any project related to natural hair?  Eske w gen pwojè ki gen rapo ak cheve natirel?

Yes. Onaturell is my first project related to hair. This project is not only about natural hair .It is for all hair types. My goal is to promote healthy hair so I don’t discriminate.

7-   Tell us about Onaturell.  Pale nou de Onaturell

Onaturell started first as a blog/website in September 2013. I had been working on the project for almost 2 years but I didn’t really know how to go about it. I was watching a lot of videos on youtube where a lot of naturalistas focus a lot on product use but not really on educating people on haircare and the science behind it. So I started doing my research, reading books, and gathering information.  Beginning of 2013, while I was still in medical school, I approach a really good friend of mine and told him about the project. He was really interested and told me that I should definitely do it.  We started working on it and in September 2013 we launch the blog/website. It was a lot of work, sleepless nights and I thank all my friends and family that were there to give me their taughts and opinion. My goal with the blog/website is to educate. Every week I try to post tips, pictures on the website/ instagram/ facebook and other information that I believe would help anybody that wanted to have a healthy journey. I also posted a list of recipes that the viewers have access to.

In November I told my boyfriend if everything works out great with Onaturell and I get positive feedbacks I can probably start selling natural products and my homemade products too. One day while I was in class he texted me and told me that if I decide to make natural products available to people in Haiti he will definitely help me out and that he believes its something that could work. With his support and my family in December I launched the store in Haiti. It is a big accomplishment, I never expected Onaturell to be what is it today. I just thank each and everyone for their amazing support and believing in what I do.

1920055_544125955703078_490966736_n

An Septanm 2013, mwen te komanse ak sit/blog Onaturell la.  M tap travay sou yon proje depi dezan men mwen pat konn koman pou m fe pou m reyalizel.  M te konn gade anpil videyo Youtube kote medam ak cheve natirel yo te chita anpil sou pwodui moun ka itilize pou pran swen cheve san yo pa vreman ede moun yon konprann zafe pran swen cheve a epi koman pou w fel.  Nan komansman ane 2013, pandanm tap etidye medsin, mwen te mande yon bon zanmim pou l ede m ak pwoje a e lit e dako.  Nou travay di anpil, pase anpil nuit san nou pa domi…mpap sispann remesye zanmim ak fanmim pou sipo yo ak opinioon yo.  Mwen itilize sit mwen an pou m edike moun yo.  Chak semen, mwen bay kek  konsey ak foto sou sit la, sou instagram ak paj Facebook pou m ede moun konnen koman pou yo gen cheve ki ansante.  Mwen konn poste reset pou cheve tou ke tout moun kapab we.

Nan fen ane pase a, grasa sipo menaj mwen ak fanmim, m te komanse vann pwodui yo ann Ayiti.  Se te yon gwo reyalizasyon pou mwen paske m pat konnen Onaturell t ap rive lwen konsa.  Mwen remesye chak grenn moun ki patisipe nan fe ke Onaturell sal ye jodi a e paske yo te met konfyans nan nou.

8-  What is your hair regimen? Ki woutin ou pou cheve w?

My regimen is very simple. I do a lot of protective styling mostly mini twist and I try to keep them for a week or two. I wash my hair once a month with my Onaturell Citrus mudwash and always rinse with Aloe vera Juice. I do a apple cider vinegar rinse very two weeks and I use my homemade styling cream to moisturize and seal my hair. I do 1 protein treatment every month.

Chanpou Onaturell fè Mudwash by Onaturell

Woutin mwen senp.  M fe anpil penyen ki pwoteje cheve a tankou de dwet tou piti epi m kite yo pou youn oswa de semen.  M lave cheve m chak mwa ak shanpou Onaturell Citrus la epi mwen rense yo ak ji lalwa.  Mwen rense cheve yo ak vineg pom chak de semen epi mwen itilize bè ke m fè pou cheve yo pou m idrate epi sele idratasyon nan cheve a.  Mwen fe yon tretman pwoteyin chak mwa.

9-  What do you like most about being natural? Sa w plis renmen lefekte w natirel?

I love the versatility

image (1)

Mwen fè sa m vle ak cheve m.

10-  A message to the existing, upcoming and potential natural hair community?

Enjoy your journey as much as possible. Know that this process is an ever learning process. There will be good hair days and bad hair days. It’s just part of the journey and once you learn to accept it you will enjoy being natural. I strongly encourage my naturalistas to use organic raw ingredients in their hair. Check out Onaturell if you really want to include natural products into your regimen.

Amize w otan w kapab ak cheve natirel ou.  Konnen ke wap toujou kontinye ap aprann.  Ap gen jou ki bel, ap gen jou kote cheve a difisil pou jere. M ankouraje nou pou nou itilize pwodi natirel nan cheve nou.  Kontakte Onaturell si w vle itilize pwodui natirel nan woutin ou pou cheve w.

Afro Alice Hebdo- Marie Valerie Placide

1-      Tell us about you. Pale nou de wou

I’m just a dreamer. I like to take chances, and performing under pressure keeps me going. I’m passionate about too many things, and I try to remain as positive as possible. Running around barefoot through a green field sounds like what I would really enjoy right now. Life has so many beautiful things, and I want to experience a lot of them.
M se yon moun ki renmen reve.  M renmen eseye, m renmen tante chans mwen e m renmen travay sou presyon.  M gen pasyon pou twop bagay e m fe gwo efo pou m toujou rete pozitif.  Pandan map pale la, m imajine m k ap kouri pye ate nan mitan zeb vet.  Lavi plen bel bagay e m vle jwi de anpil ladan yo

2-        When and why did you return natural?

I was natural off and on. I had my first dramatic cut in high school. Back then, it wasn’t cool at all, and some people tried to make fun of me. Eventually, they got around it, and wrote nice things about it in my yearbook. I cut it again my junior year in college after a spring break trip. I’m way too adventurous to have relaxed hair. I decided I’d never get a relaxer again when I came back. I left my hair very short for a while.
M retire pemanant plizye fwa deja. Men lem pral gradye, yo tout te ekri bon bagay sou cheve m nan kane souvni m nan.  Pandanm nan dezyem ane nan kolej, apre m sot an vwayaj pandan vakans nan prentan m te rekoupel.  M two renmen avanti pou m ta gen cheve pemanant.  Jou sa a m te deside mwen pap met pemanant anko.  Depi le sa m te kite cheve m kout pou yon bon ti tan.
399019_609743167839_1358727551_n

3-       How did people surrounding you react to the change?  Koman moun bo kote w te reyaji le w koupe cheve w ?

At first, not everyone liked my cut. I’ve always wanted to look like my mom so she was the main reason I decided to cut it. She was fine with it, but I can hear whispers from other people.

4-      Who were your supporters? Your hairspirations? Kiyes ki te sipote w? Kiyes ki te enspirasyon w?

I think everyone eventually fell in love with the look. I still get a few bad comments, but they’re from people who don’t matter. I don’t really have any hairspirations. I like my hair just like it is. After I cut it in college, I was ok with the texture, and I was ok with the length. I just always want to feel comfortable. With comfort, there’s confidence, and that’s how I’ve been since then. The person who inspired me was my mom after I saw how beautiful she looked in a photograph when she was younger. You know whose hair I’m really loving right now? Lupita Nyong’o. I mean the woman is overall just fantastic, but she’s making me want to cut my hair again!
Lupita Nyong’o.  Wouy! Tifi a jis tcheke!  E li fe m anvi rekoupe chevem!

5-       Are you working on any project related to natural hair?  Eske wap travay sou pwoje ki gen rapo ak cheve natirel?

Not really, but I’m working on many exciting things at the moment. I can hardly contain myself! You’ll find out what they are soon.
M pa vreman gen pwoje nan sans sa men map travay sou yon seri pwoje ki enteresan anpil nan moman an.  Se gwo jefo map fe pou m pa pale.  Antouka, n ap konnen pwoje sa yo tale konsa.

6-       What is your hair regimen?  Ki woutin ou gen pou cheve w?

My hair regimen is to condition a lot. I shampoo twice a month when I’m not wearing breads, and co-wash with conditioner other times. It’s important to retain moisture in the hair so I use different leave-ins and seal with natural oils. I’ve been loving Kreyol Essence’s Haitian castor oil and their Pomade Kreyol too.
Woutin mwen se pou m idrate cheve m anpil.  M lave chevem ak chanpou defwa pa mwa le m pa gen alonj nan tet mwen, mwen lave yo ak rens apre sa.  Li enpotan anpil pou cheve a kenbe idratasyon an se sak fe m itilize plizye losyon pou moun penyen (leave ins) epi mwen sele idratasyon an ak luil natirel.  M vreman renmen luil maskreti Kreyol Essence lan ak tout Pomad Kreyol yo a.

7-        What do you like most about being natural?

I love the freedom and versatility. I think it adds character to who I am. I feel stronger with my little ‘fro. I almost feel like I don’t need to say much with my hair in its natural state. It’s like what you see is what you get.
Mwen lib epi mwen vesatil.  M gen plis pesonalite, m  santi m gen plis jaret ak ti afro m.  M santi m pa gen twop bagay pou di lem ak cheve m paske sa w we a tou di w sak egziste a.

8-       A message to the existing, upcoming and potential natural hair community?

Become natural for you. Stay true to yourself, and love your hair. Don’t look at other people’s hair success stories, focus on your own. Every hair is different and requires different routines. Do your research and find out what works for you. You are beautiful and so is your hair. Stand tall with that afro, girl.
Retounen natirel pou tet pa w.  Kle ak tet ou epi renmen cheve w.  Pa gade istwa lot moun ak cheve yo, rete konsantre sou cheve pa w.  Chak cheve diferan epi yo mande swen ak stil ki diferan.

Afro Alice te pran ti tan pou fè entèvyou ak Christina Julmé, yon as nan motive moun pou ale pi devan, youn nan figi dèyè mouvman Bèl Nègès la…. Pran ti tan pou nou li sak vin apre a

Men jiskaprezan fidbak yo trè pozitif.

3-     Koman moun ki pwoch w te reyaji (fanmi w, zanmi w, koleg w, etc)

Jiskaprezan, moun ki pa menm ap viv an Ayiti apresye anpil pwojè www.belneges.com nan. Gen anpil moun k ap swiv mouvman sa de prè pou gade ki kote l ap rive.

Mwen garanti yo, yo pap desi. Paske objektif  Belneges, se chanje konsepsyon BOTE a an Ayiti e fè l aksesib ak tout moun. Se pou sa, l ap trè bon pou yon fi swiv sa k ap pase sou sit la ak sou rezo sosyo belneges yo: https://twitter.com/BelNeges (Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/BoteAnndanKouDeyo?fref=ts (Facebook), paske patnè nou yo pral kòmanse bay pwodui k ap bon pou yo ak anpil lòt sipriz ankò.

4-     Kiyes ki te sipote w?  Kiyes ki te enspire w?

Enspirasyon Belneges la sòti nan lide pou edike e fasilite lavi tifi ki pral tounen fanm responsab nan sosyete a demen a travè BOTE. Paske jan anpil moun ka kwè l, bote pa sèlman makiye, bèl cheve ak bèl rad. Bote nou pale sou Belneges la se yon zouti pou yon fi devlope lavi l ak lavi moun k ap viv bò kote l.

Pou sipò, jèn ti fi ki pa menm kapab achte yon sachè dlo, yon pate oubyen yon djin bay tèt yo, k ap di nou ki efò y ap fè pou edike tèt yo plis e kapasite y ap reyalize yo te genyen san yo pa t menm konnen, gras ak Belneges se pi gwo sipò nou te ka janm jwenn pou fèmouvman sa a rive sou plis moun chak jou plis.

5-     Eske w aptravay sou pwojè ki gen rapo ak cheve natirel nan moman an?

Nou gen yon chèn videyo k ap sòti ak plizyè videyo pou premye anivèsè www.belneges.com . e mwen garanti medam yo, y ap jwenn tout sa yo bezwen pou pran swen cheve yo, zong yo, po yo ak tout kò yo byen fasil. Sèlman ret konekte ak BELNEGES.

6-     Ki rejim ou pou cheve w?

Rejim nou pataje ak lektris fidèl www.belneges.com yo, se tout pwodui ki natirèl yo ka achte oubyen yo ka fè lakay yo KI PA VANN CHE. Paske gwoup belneges sible a, lajan k ap rantre nan men yo a pa anpil.

E nou sansibilize medam yo tou anpil, sou enpòtans sa genyen pou bote a sòti anndan yo pou l ka parèt sou figi yo.

Tout sekrè a chita nan KONNEN SAW GENYEN YO SE YO KI PA W E SE YO KI FE W BEL.

Afro Alice Hebdo – Meet the Face Behind Opinion des Femmes

Afro Alice has taken the time to interview a very remarkable figure in the Facebook haitian community, Rachel Misère.

 1- Tell me about yourself.

First of all, I am very honored to be interviewed by an awesome Fanm Vanyan like you, who is doing a great thing for the Haitian natural hair community. I am a servant of the highest God, I am simple yet I loathe mediocrity. I also like to help others and encourage them; in addition, I like to have fun and be inspired by everything and everyone. I like nature and try to be outdoors whenever I can.

2- Tell me about Opinions des Femmes

I always had a passion to help women – Haitian women, and my people. I’ve worked with the Haitian Community. Therefore, I have seen and heard everything that is oppressing Haitian Women. I had an urge to do something about it so I ‘’ bat bouda’m, mwen leve pye’m ‘’ (dust my butt and get on my feet).  On October 5, 2012, a platform was created by me with an amazing, beautiful and strong team consisted of 5 Haitian women, hence Opinions de Femmes.  It is a community for Haitian Women to come and feel at home, it’s like a virtual home for my Fanm lakay to express themselves fully, to learn, to cry, to ASK for help, to enjoy life, to educate, to advocate, to encourage, finding solution, to support each other and learn new ways to live life to the fullest.

3- Any upcoming project for Opinions des Femmes?

Yes, Opinions de Femmes is a ‘’ Lakou’’ in progress. We are still crawling yet we have BIG dreams for the future. We are working on creating a logo and a magazine; we hope to get an office based in Haiti and abroad where we want to create a community for women.  The rest shall remain a surprise!!!! Stay tuned ladies.

4- How and when did you return natural?

After my hair got damaged by a perm in March 2008, I decided right away that keeping it natural was the best decision.  I cut my hair, the ends precisely, and braided it for the following years. My mom usually sends me Minoval for my roots and always advises me to wash it with Herbal essences, which I did for a while. However, I started taking care of my natural crown in September 2010; I have discovered the natural hair community then, and was grateful.

5- How did people surrounding you react to this change?

I had a great support system during that time and still do. My parents are a big advocate for natural hair, my sister is a great cheerleader and most of my peers are natural as well, so the reaction was pretty positive.

 6- Who is your hairspiration?

My hair inspiration is my sister, I once saw a picture she had when she was natural, I was in awe ( she’s going back to natural now, thank God, probably after my constant winning for her to go back, 🙂 ),  she had a mega afro and that’s what I am striving for, a big and healthy afro.  My other hair inspiration is Jenell from Kinky Curly Coily Me, I’ve seen her hair grow from a TWA to shoulder length.

 7- Who did support you?

My support was my family, close friends and the natural hair community. Other women with natural hair motivated me as well; it has become acceptable now to wear our hair freely and without judgment. Although, you are going to hear ignorant comments from ignorant individuals, when I see other natural women in the street, as soon as our eyes meet, we smile, it’s like to say ‘’I respect you ‘’ and that is an encouragement!

8- What do you love about being natural?

Being natural gave me a boost of confidence to wear my hair the way it was created; it also encouraged me to wear more colors. It saves me money and help me embraced myself fully as a Haitian Women.  I like the fact that I can do various styles with it; I can wet it whenever and wherever, overall I like the relationship I have with my hair.

9- What is your hair regimen?

My hair regimen consisted of washing it once a week, with a natural shampoo I purchase at Whole Foods called 365, and the great Tresemmé Naturals conditioner. Right after that I used the L.O.C (Liquid, Oil, Cream) method; I then spray my hair with oil, either Jojoba, almond or argan, afterward I seal it with the raw Shea butter.  During the week I sprayed my hair with a concoction of oil I made with water and oils; I added various oils, argan, avocado, jojoba, castor, and olive oil to keep my scalp moisturized because it gets dry often. It does wonders for my hair.

10- What is your opinion on the natural hair revolution going on in the States and in Haiti?

My opinion is that I am more excited to see Haitian women wearing their hair natural, as you are aware, our community don’t appreciate’’ Fanm tèt grenn’’ and  I think it was a stronghold that needed to be fought and we are doing it peacefully and with class. So I encouraged any women going down that road to ignore the naysayers and wear your hair however you choose. More power to our Haitian Women. Enjoy your life ladies to the fullest and we at Opinions de femmes love you! Kenbe fèm, pa febli!

11- A message to the natural hair community?

Enjoy yourself, be genuine, eat healthy, be patient, support one another and stay connected to your roots.
